With the aim of designing and developing modular street luminaires with LED technology, Stimulo collaborated with AD Lighting to meet the demand for a versatile type of urban lighting. Considering the novelty of LED, DENEB had to dare to communicate this new technology to lighting buyers while fitting into different urban spaces, such as parks, squares and business areas.

In the competitive lighting industry, product versatility is highly valued by developers, and an important factor for buyers. AD Lighting’s projects and clients differed greatly in cultural style, size and lighting application requirements. After AD and Stimulo finalised the strategic research, the objective was clear: to design and develop a highly versatile modular street luminaire that had to fit in different urban spaces and at the same time communicate the new LED technology to all users. Before starting the conceptualisation process, we studied in depth the different lighting needs that urban planners had. The research included the analysis of public parks, squares, business centres and residential areas. Finally, we interviewed different lighting buyers, who felt that the market needed designs that would efficiently communicate the new LED technology.

The use of LED gave the designers complete freedom to conceptualise. As soon as we finished the market study, Stimulo and AD decided to place the Deneb as far away as possible from the old incandescent bulb lanterns. That’s why the design team decided to create a hole that gave a very clear message: we are no longer using light bulbs. After proposing different concepts, we evaluated them together with the team of engineers and urban planners. The chosen concept, the Deneb, is inspired by the wheel of an old carriage. After finishing the development of the Deneb, Stimulo designed an entire family of luminaires, which gave AD Lighting the advantage of offering versatile solutions to its different clients, while communicating the company’s knowledge of LED technology. In 2012 the Deneb was awarded the prestigious Chinese Design Award.
