Looking for the limit

Ask anyone who goes downhill about the first time they stepped on a skateboard and went down a hill, and they will all tell you roughly the same thing; the feeling of being on the edge. The invisible line of fear that exists in our brains and the non-existent wall that we spend most of our lives trying to break through to become better, faster and stronger.

This point is crucial for the design team to understand the challenge between being the fastest and the safest.

Design and technology

Salvador, founder of Baluarte Barcelona, is an expert with more than 30 years modelling, prototyping and manufacturing special projects. After developing the first prototype of the LB11 monpatí, Salvador contacted the Stimulo team to develop a RS (Racing Services) longboard specifically for downhill competition.

There is a trend to develop new carbon fibre long skateboards over traditional wooden ones, not only because of their strong and lightweight components, but also because they are extremely strong and can take on shapes and deformations that wood cannot.

The fabrication process consists of two carbon fibre outer parts pre-impregnated with a lightweight SikaAxson rsf816G(®) green epoxy resin plus an internal truck bed made of polyurethane. After starting to experiment with different carbon fibre and composite materials, consideration was given to adding an inner extruded structure containing 45° biaxially microwave-hardened glass fibre. This configuration gives the LB15 and LB17 pieces a great capacity to absorb the irregularities of the ground, obtaining a better response than any other wood or carbon fibre plate, which provides a safer and faster curve thanks to the work of its internal structure.

Each skateboard is made to order and assembled by hand. The LB17 series is available exclusively from Baluarte.
