Requirements
Designing an outdoor luminaire with large optical modularity
Carandini needed to develop a versatile and multi-purpose street lighting product for mainly environmental uses, adaptable to any urban environment and aimed at an increasingly global market. Stimulo accepted the challenge and took on the development of the project together with Carandini’s technical department. To successfully design any project it is essential to actively participate in the entire development process. That is why at Stimulo we are involved from the initial stages to the launch of any type of design in which we participate.

Focused on functional and virtual prototyping for agile testing and improvement.
Co-creation is one of the most powerful activities when it comes to aligning expectations, needs and design requirements, especially when dealing with the increasingly cross-cutting challenges facing the lighting world. That’s why the Stimulo team organised a series of creativity sessions with Carandini to understand the basic design and development decisions involved, as well as understanding our client’s strategy and needs. During these workshops, an initial analysis was carried out in order to define the characteristics of the future product. Technical elements were presented, aiming at easy installation, excellent heat dissipation, size requirements or those related to light. In addition to all this, there was also a fundamental aspect: the need to design a robust, but at the same time minimalist aesthetic that would allow Carandini’s DNA to be easily identified.
It was precisely in the ideation phase that the two drivers on which the final design would pivot were defined, a fact that made it possible to offer value to the product’s performance as well as commercial competitiveness.
For the design of the Mikos luminaire, Stimulo applied its 4D methodology (Define, Design, Develop and Deploy) based on the principles of Design Thinking and lean models that allowed for a more agile, flexible and adaptive decision-making process that was highly oriented towards the functional or virtual prototype in order to test and improve. We established the foundations of the project with a broad and open point of view and, through a process of iteration and joint decision-making that allowed us to move towards the objective.

Technical aspects for an even more versatile, eco-designed family
The end result is the Carandini Mikos ambient floodlight, available in two sizes (S and M). A flexible lighting solution that, thanks to its wide range of optical solutions, can be perfectly adapted to any urban environment, whether it is a park, roundabout or urban road, where it has been tested and verified according to the initial objectives of the project.
One of the pillars of Carandini since its inception has been sustainability. That is why one of the requirements for the development of the new Mikos luminaire was eco-design, a practice that aims to reduce the environmental impact of the product throughout its life cycle, as well as selecting materials with a lower impact on the environment.
